“It’s too cold outside for angels to fly.”—Ed Sheeran
It’s cold. And it’s going to stay cold, with temperatures staying below freezing throughout the weekend. Fortunately, the fun family-friendly events in Newton are all indoors. Shop at a winter market for locally made gifts. Check out several holiday-themed concerts. Let the warmth of music and community make you forget that it’s 20 degrees outside.
Here are seven things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Dec. 12
From 5 to 8 p.m., head over to 275 Grove for a festive Winter Market of Newton, featuring more than 20 local vendors selling handmade crafts, artisanal treats, food and more. There will also be a raffle and live music. Raffle ticket proceeds will benefit the Newton Food Pantry. Can’t make it Friday? No problem. The market will also be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 13
From 4 to 5:30 p.m., All Newton Music School will host a free Winter POPS experience, featuring ANMS faculty performing jazz and pop and classic holiday music.
From 5 to 6:30 p.m., Suzuki School of Newton will host a concert by viola students and faculty, performing classical favorites.
Sunday, Dec 14
From 2 to 3 p.m., Listen to Stephen Porter perform Mendelssohn at the Newton Free Library at 330 Homer St.
From 3 to 4 p.m., the New Philharmonia Orchestra and Boston Ballet School will perform their annual holiday concert, “Celebrations!” featuring scenes from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” and other holiday favorites. Tickets range from $10 to $20 and are available, along with more information, at www.newphil.org.
From 4 to 6 p.m., St. John’s Episcopal Church at 297 Lowell Ave. will host the Festival of Lessons and Carols with a reception to follow. This service features the choirs of Grace Church, Parish of St. Paul’s and St. John’s, and combines scripture with carols and hymns to tell the story of Christmas.
At 6 p.m., Hear Merulae, a Boston-based Swedish music group, sing music dedicated to Saint Lucia, at the Scandinavian Cultural Center, at 206 Waltham St. Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for non-members.
