The Rotary Club of Newton hosted its second annual Dog Fest and Parade on Sunday morning, bringing together dogs and dog owners to raise money for local charitable causes including scholarship funds for the city’s high school students.

The fest took place outside the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands. Dog owners were encouraged to dress their pups in costume for a dog parade around the neighborhood. Free doggie bags, treats and toys were available at tables throughout the event.

Money raised through sponsorships and vendor participation fees will go toward six academic scholarships for high school students in Newton. Vendors included several local pet-related businesses, such as Mr. Nice Dog Grooming Salon, Sit Pretty Dog Training and the Veterinary Eye Center, based in Newton.

David Sellers, a member of the Rotary Club of Newton’s Board, said three scholarships will be awarded to students in technical programs at Newton North High School. The scholarships will range in size from $900 to $1500 in total.

“It’s just a really nice way for the community to come together, and for people who love dogs,” said Rae Mintz, a member of the Rotary Club of Newton. “And I hope the vendors do well, I hope they get business.”

Emily Allie, a client services representative at Newton’s Veterinary Eye Center location, said the organization loves participating in local events to help raise awareness of pet health issues before they happen.

“We take care of animal eyes, but we’re also incredibly huge on education,” she said. “Educating on different conditions that we can treat, things that we’re capable of doing at our eye center and things to look out for in your own pets to reduce panic and create awareness.”

Dog Fest organizers said they intend to keep the annual event ongoing for next year and beyond.
