Launching in January 2023, The Newton Beacon is a new nonprofit digital news site committed to fair, nonpartisan and professional reporting of breaking local news and issues. The focus is local – rooted in and devoted to covering news and issues in the City of Newton, Massachusetts.
The impetus for the Beacon’s founding is the decline of local news reporting in Newton. Numerous studies have shown that such a decline is linked to a lessening in voter participation, a corrosion of fact-based decision making and a weakening of government accountability. We cannot stand by and let this happen in our community.
The Newton News Foundation, Inc., a recently established 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, is the publisher of the Beacon. It is governed by an independent board of directors who are local residents concerned about the lack of an independent news source in our community. The board has fiduciary and operational responsibilities, but decisions about the coverage and content will be the sole responsibility of the paid professional journalists.
