“While it is February, one can taste the full joys of anticipation. Spring stands at the gate with her finger on the latch.”—Patience Strong, British poet
Spring will have to be more patient at that gate, as temperatures this weekend are expected to linger just below freezing with a chance of snow on Sunday. But Newton has lots of February fun for your family to help you pass the cold time.
Ever been to a mustard tasting? Ever made a stain-glass window decoration? Enjoyed pancakes while watching a drag queen sing Motown classics? This is a weekend to try new things while we wait for the renewal of spring.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Feb. 7
From 6 to 8 p.m., the Scandinavian Cultural Center will host “Mustard Magic: A Nordic Tasting Adventure.” Participants will sample many different kinds of mustard from the region that has used mustard for medicine and food since the Viking era. Tickets are $45 for adults and $10 for kids ages 12 and younger. Tickets include a sampling of various Nordic mustards with Nordic style hotdogs, sausages and pretzels.
Saturday, Feb. 8
From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., The Biltmore Bar & Grill (1205 Chestnut St.) will have a Motown-themed Drag Brunch hosted by drag queen Jean Chandler.
From 1 to 4 p.m., All Over Newton will host a Valentine’s Day Craft Crawl, at the New Art Center. Participants will create heart-shaped faux stained glass sun catchers to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Cost is $5 per participant.
At 4 p.m., All Newton Music School will host “Rockaway Cafe: The ANMS Lounge,” featuring performances of pop music, rock, jazz and folk by ANMS faculty. Admission is $10.
Sunday, Feb. 9
From 2 to 3 p.m., Newtonville Books (10 Langley Road, Newton Centre) will host an event, Celebrate Black History Month—Meet the Authors, featuring Lisa Stringfellow (author, A Comb of Wishes and Kingdom of Dust) and Phoebe Sinclair (author, Confessions of a Candy Snatcher) reading from their books and talking about writing for children. You can even get copies for them to sign. The event is organized by Newton Community Pride and is aimed at kids ages eight through 12, but all are welcome. Admission is free.
