The Declaration of Independence, typically seen as the birth of the United States, was signed 250 years ago. And like the rest of the country, Newton, celebrated July 4 with reverence, pride and lots of food.

And it was hotter than Hades. By late morning at the Newton Centre Bowl, ice cream was melting faster than it was being scooped.

But the crowds didn’t seem to mind. The festival at Albemarle Field saw thousands of attendees. There was live music by the Bo & Bill Winiker Band on the main stage, and the gazebo had different bands throughout the day leading up to the big fireworks show at dusk.

Newton’s not done celebrating the nation’s 250th, though. On Wednesday at 10 a.m., there will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence at the City Hall War Memorial Auditorium.

Here are some photos from Saturday’s festivities.
