Newton’s Josh Micley to lead Camp Yavneh

Josh Micley has been appointed camp director at Camp Yavneh in Northwood, N.H.

Micley has served as a camp director, a public school teacher, and a school administrator, and he has two graduate degrees in education.

“Josh Micley is a dynamic and values-driven leader with a genuine love for Jewish life and community,” Camp Yavneh Board Chair Ruby Gelman wrote in a letter to the community. “He brings a thoughtful blend of strategic thinking, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to people. Josh is a Yavneh alum who spent nine years as a camper and eight years on staff, and is part of a multi-generational Yavneh family. His connection to camp is both personal and profound—he understands, in a very real way, what Yavneh means.”

Micley served as camp director at Capital Camps & Retreat Center in Rockville, Md., since 2024. Previously, he was an assistant principal at the John F. Kennedy High School in Chicago, and he taught high school social studies in New York City for four years.

In a letter to campers’ families, Micley wrote, “Yavneh is a community for which I have tremendous love and deep connection. It’s where I first realized that I wanted to dedicate my life to creating meaningful experiences for young people. It has shaped my Judaism, my connection to Israel, and my understanding of what it means to truly live in community with others.”

Historic Newton gets revolutionary

Last weekend, while the nation (including a massive crowd at Newton Centre) was engaged in the “No Kings” protests, Historic Newton was reenacting America’s original “No Kings” movement at the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds.

Reenactors dressed in 18th century fashion talked to guests about the goings-on of the times.

The event attracted hundreds of people, Historic Newton Director Lisa Dady said. “It’s lovely to see this place come alive with reenactors and experts. And people of all ages, I notice they’re staying and doing all of the activities, and they’re learning a lot. Learning a lot and having fun. That’s what we’re all about.”

Historic Newton will have a second Revolution-era event next week, “Naughty Newton After Dark,” in which the Durant-Kenrick House will become a pub. That event is for adults only.

Bench along Boston Marathon route honors dedicated supporter

Gov. Maura Healey was recently in Newton alongside former Boston Marathon Director Dave McGillivray and members of the local running community for a bench dedication in honor of Susan Hurley, founder of nonprofit ChartyTeams, who died of cancer in November.

The bench is near the Johnny Kelly statue along the marathon route, where Hurley liked to cheer the runners as they ran the course.

WCVB has the whole story.
