The good news is we’re getting a break from the scorching heat. The bad news is that break comes with a threat of showers.
But Friday is going to give us a beautiful night for a concert at the Hyde. And there’s a ton of fun awaiting you in Newton, including a Celebration of Queer Culture, a fundraiser for cats and the opening of the much-anticipated Newton Centre Plaza.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, June 27
From 6 to 10 p.m., enjoy music from Hurry Sundown, a rock and country cover band, and stick around to watch “Sonic the Hedgehog 3“ at the Hyde Bandstand, 90 Lincoln St.
Saturday, June 28
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Hyde will host Newton Pride: A Celebration of Queer Culture, in honor of LGBTQ pride month, with food, music, art activities and more. Part of the event includes a Queer Family Meetup (a bring-your-lunch picnic) from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
From 6 to 9 p.m., The Cat Connection of Brighton and Waltham (a rescue organization that serves all of MetroWest) will be hosting its ninth annual “Everything is Coming Up Rose” garden party fundraiser at the Durrant-Kendrick House, 286 Waverley Ave.. There will be a raffle, a silent auction, dinner, an open bar and entertainment.
Sunday, June 29
From 10 to 11 a.m., learn about buildings designed by local architect HH Richardson, best known for Boston’s Trinity Church, from author and Richardson enthusiast Ken Bresler. This tour will take place on a D-line train. Location to be announced.
At noon, the city will host the opening of the Newton Centre Plaza, with games, art and live ukulele performances (moved from Saturday to Sunday).
You can find more events or submit your own on our Events Page.
And the city has an ongoing list of arts-related events on the Newton Arts Calendar.
