The formerly drab bathhouse at Crystal Lake has gotten a makeover.

Spark Newton recently commissioned two new public murals on the outside of the bathhouse, painted by Boston-based artist Ruby Rose, as a gift to the city.

The two 8-by-8-foot murals are inspired by Crystal Lake and Levingston Cove and feature bright colors and intricate details to draw and captivate people’s attention as they head to the lake for a swim.

“This mural celebrates the familiar joys of Crystal Lake—swimming, fishing, biking, picnicking and gathering by the water’s edge—while imagining the playful, dreamlike worlds that may exist just below the surface,” Rose, who has created more than 30 murals throughout Massachusetts, said.

Spark Newton, formerly known as Newton Community Pride, is a local nonprofit launched in 1989 that celebrates art and community connection with events, public art displays, beautified public spaces and more. 

“The murals represent exactly what our Public Art Initiative is all about: partnering with artists to create meaningful works in shared public spaces,” Spark Newton Executive Director Leandra Sharron said. “They spark curiosity and invite people of all ages to encounter art in their everyday lives.”

Last year, Spark Newton gave the city a similar gift: Murals on the outside of the newly renovated Gath Pool complex.
