That smoky haze from the Canadian wildfires should dissipate a bit by the weekend, so the air will be a little less apocalyptic for your family’s enjoyment.

And it will be replaced with the smoke of Italian sausages sizzling on a grill, mingling with the scent of popcorn and fried dough, as the 91st St. Mary of Carmen Society Italian Festival takes over Pellegrini Park in Nonantum. On Sunday, the festival will end with the annual Procession of the Madonna down Adams Street.

There’s also a Disability Pride Month celebration and a screening of “The Princess Bride.”

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, July 17

At 6 p.m., the third night of Nonantum’s 91st Italian-American Festival kicks off with the Waltham High Show Band at 6 p.m. and the Legit Band at 8:30 p.m. There’s also a carnival and lots of food to enjoy. The festival runs through the weekend.

From 6 to 8 p.m., Listen to folk/blues/rock group the DayBreakers at the Hyde Community Center, 90 Lincoln St. Stick around from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. for the 1987 fantasy film The Princess Bride. This 1 hour 38 minute film is rated PG.

Sunday, July 19

From 2 to 4 p.m., the Cooper Center for Active Living will host a Disability Pride Month celebration, featuring art, music, sensory-friendly activities and more.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m., the city’s weekly Performances in the Park rock on with the Petty Larceny Band at the Newton Centre Bowl, 69 Tyler Terrace. Admission is free. Bring a chair or a blanket. and don’t forget your snacks.

From 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., the Italian-American Festival concludes with a Mass at 8 a.m., the Procession of the Madonna down Adams Street at 2 p.m., a concert by the band Seabreeze at 6 p.m., and a candlelight procession to Our Lady Church at 10 p.m.
