Snapshots: Newton caps of Pride with Celebration of Queer Culture

Saturday morning’s light rain gave way to a field of rainbows across Hyde Community Center as Newton Pride held its Celebration of Queer Culture, honoring the LGBTQ community and creating a space to bond with queer people and allies while listening to live music.

There were various advocacy groups there, including LGBTQ+ Newton, making its debut in its inaugural Pride Month.

“We launched six months ago, so we’re new,” Marcia Johnson, former alderman and a member of the group, said.

The group serves as a network for LGBTQ people and allies to keep in touch about various initiatives and events and maintain a strong community.

In the wake of pushback against LGBTQ rights in the courts and federal government, Newton’s leaders have promised to keep Newton a thriving space for LGBTQ residents, workers and families.
