It’s been a hot August so far, more than making up for that cool, damp July. Fortunately, Newton has the Gath Pool complex and Crystal Lake to help cool off. And the lake is now reopened, safe for swimming.

The heat is expected to turn down a little this weekend, with highs inn the low-80s, so it may be a perfect time for outdoor fun. Head to Newton South on Saturday for an all-day tennis tournament. Or check out the Newton Cemetery garden tour or India Day celebration at the Hyde on Sunday.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Saturday, Aug. 15

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Garden City Tennis Singles will be held at Newton South High School, 140 Brandeis Road. Participation is $120.

From 3 to 4:30 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host Cupcake Wars, a fun competition in which teens and tweens will bake and decorate cupcakes and present to a panel of judges. Registration is required.

Sunday, Aug. 16

From 10 to 11:30 a.m., Newton Cemetery & Arboretum will host a walking horticultural tour showcasing the property’s perennial gardens. The tour group will meet in the Chapel parking lot. Parking is available along cemetery roads or in the Chapel parking lot. Admission is $15, and registration is required (space is limited).

From 11:45 to 1 p.m., Eliot Church of Newton, 474 Centre St., will host a presentation on the history of African missions in the United Church of Christ by linguist and historian Dr. Emmanuel Sithole, who will discuss his research in the archives of Harvard University and in the Boston Congregational Library and Archives. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

From 4 to 7:30 p.m., the Indian American Community of Newton will host India Day, a celebration of Indian culture and heritage, at the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands. There will be food, dancing, face-painting and much more. Admission is free.
