August seems to have come and gone like a thief in the night, as Monday starts a new month and meteorological fall. But don’t break out the scarves and apple cider yet. It’s going to be around 80 degrees all weekend.

There’s a country concert and a movie about a green ogre. There’s a showing of a Fred Astair classic. There’s a walk to benefit ALS research.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, Aug. 28

From 6 to 8 p.m., the New England-native musical duo Jilly Martin and Ryan Brooks Kelly will perform a concert at the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands. After the concert, the movie “Shrek” will be shown at dusk.

Saturday, Aug. 29

From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the city will have its Saturday Farmers’ Market at Newton North High School.

From 1 to 3 p.m., West Newton Cinema will show a musical matinee, “The Bandwagon,” starring Fred Astair as a Broadway has-been looking for a comeback. Tickets are $12.

From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a Trail Mix Bar, in which teens in grades 6 through 12 can try different ingredient combinations to find the perfect trail mix for their late summer adventures. Registration is required.

Sunday, Aug. 30

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the ALS Walk for Research will be held, starting and ending at Zervas Elementary School. The event supports the ALS Therapy Development Institute, a nonprofit biotech founded in Newton that is dedicated to discovering and developing treatments for ALS. Register online.
