Newton police have identified the bicyclist killed in an accident Monday as Alex Bohm, PhD, a professor at Tufts University.

Bohm, 57, was riding a bicycle westbound on Watertown Street Monday afternoon when a UPS vehicle taking a left turn onto Bridge Street collided with him, a preliminary investigation suggests.

Bohm was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Bohm was an associate professor of developmental, molecular and chemical biology at Tufts University, where he went by Dr. A. Andrew Bohm.

Tufts issued a statement on Tuesday expressing grief over Bohm’s death, calling him a beacon of guidance and support for the post-doc community.

“From hosting coffee hours to kayaking on the Charles River, he built a community where post-docs felt valued, supported, and empowered to thrive both academically and personally,” the statement reads in part. “He served with an open mind, a generous heart, and a genuine dedication to the post-doc community and the university.”

There will be a vigil at Tufts at a day and time yet to be announced.
