Immigration & Customs Enforcement detained two people in Newton Thursday.

Mayor Marc Laredo alerted the community via email Thursday that ICE agents had taken someone into custody outside Newton District Court and another outside City Hall.

“Based on the information we have at this time, ICE agents detained, and took into custody, an individual outside of the Newton District Court,” Laredo said. “Simultaneously, a motor vehicle driven by an acquaintance of the detained individual was followed away from the Newton District Court and was stopped by ICE agents in front of Newton City Hall. The acquaintance was then detained.”

Laredo did not have any information about the immigration status of the people detained or if they had criminal warrants.

Someone called 9-1-1 during the arrest, Laredo added.

“Upon arriving at the scene, the officers of the Newton Police Department maintained order and remained on scene until the detained acquaintance was released by the ICE agents and all parties dispersed,” the mayor wrote.

On Thursday afternoon, Superintendent Anna Nolin sent parents a message via ParentSquare telling them about the arrests and trying to assure families that NPS is a welcoming district for all students.

“Every corner of NPS should feel safe and welcoming to our students and families,” Nolin wrote. “We are committed to this as a core part of helping our students thrive.”

Nolin added that the School Committee plans to meet on Monday to review and possibly adopt the PROTECT Act, a new state law signed by Gov. Maura Healey last month that establishes protections against civil immigration enforcement and prohibits ICE arrests in courthouses, schools and other locations.
