On Tuesday night, the Newton Police Department invites the public to come hang out in West Newton with police, firefighters and some ice cream.

National Night Out is Aug. 4, and the city will have its celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. at Capt. John Ryan Park, next to the police headquarters off Washington Street.

The event will have music by Jam Sandwich, games, balloon art, a bounce house, a fire truck for kids to check out, food from Cabot’s and Paddy’s Pub and more.

“This family-friendly event offers a chance for neighbors to meet one another, engage with Newton officers, and explore local resources in a welcoming environment,” Lt. Amanda Henrickson wrote in announcing this year’s lineup. “Thanks to the generous support of the City of Newton, community stakeholders, and local small businesses, the event will be free and inclusive for all attendees.”

National Night Out started in 1984, with the first year’s event held in 400 communities across 23 states, according to the National Night Out website, and grew to include 17,000 communities nationwide.
