Newton voters made their collective voice heard on Tuesday and picked an almost entirely new School Committee.
Unlike in 2023, in which no School Committee seats were contested, this year the election spotlight was on School Committee. Six members did not seek reelection, and the mayor, who serves as the ninth person on the committee, also opted not to run again. So of the nine people making decisions on the Newton School Committee, seven will be new in January.
Here’s who will sit on the Newton School Committee in January:
Ward 1: Arrianna Proia
Ward 2: Linda Swain
Ward 3: Jason Bhardwaj
Ward 4: Tamika Olszewski (incumbent, unopposed)
Ward 5: Ben Schlesinger
Ward 6: Jonathan Greene
Ward 7: Alicia Piedalue (incumbent, unopposed)
Ward 8: Victor Lee
The School Committee races of 2025 follow a budget crisis just months ago, which followed a tw0-week teachers’ strike last year, which followed more than a year of breakdowns in contract negotiations with the Newton Teachers Association.
Voters were ready to turn the page for Newton’s schools. And in a race that had mayoral candidate Marc Laredo’s slate of endorsees against candidates backed by the Newton Teachers Association, Laredo’s picks had a clean sweep.
