Marc Laredo is now mayor-elect of Newton, having defeated opponent Al Cecchinelli with 77 percent of the vote compared with Cecchinelli’s 13 percent, according to unofficial totals from the city clerk’s office. The remaining 10 percent consists of blanks and write-ins.
Laredo was an assistant attorney general in the Criminal Bureau of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office before co-founding the law firm Laredo, Smith & Kane LLP. He served on the Newton School Committee for eight years during the 2000s and was elected to the Board of Aldermen (now the City Council) in 2011. Laredo has served as council president twice.
At District 118 in Newton Highlands Tuesday night, Laredo praised Cecchinelli for an issues-focused, cordial race.
“Al and I don’t agree on virtually any political issue,” he said. “But we do share something. We share a deep and abiding love for this city.”
Laredo pledged to run a transparent, customer service-focused City Hall.
“When I go around the city, and when I knock on doors, here’s something that’s really self-evident: People really like living in Newton,” he said. “In fact, they love living in Newton. Sure, they’ll complain about the schools, and they’ll complain about the potholes, and complain about their trash, and they’ll complain about noise, and they’ll complain about construction. You get a lot of complaints when you knock on doors, but when you ask people what they think about the city, they love living here and they want to stay here. Boy, that’s a great base to build upon.”
