Newton’s City Council is about to have a bunch of new faces.
Cyrus Dahmubed won one of Ward 4’s at-large seats. Incumbent Joshua Krintzman won the other one, securing a fifth term on the council.
“It’s still a shock,” Dahmubed said as he celebrated with Krintzman at O’Hara’s in Newton Highlands.
Krintzman got the highest number of votes in that race, winning about 51 percent.
“This is important, because it reflects some level of either acceptance or pleasure with the work I’ve done on the City Council,” Krintzman said.
Dahmubed pulled in around 40 percent of the vote, and the third candidate in that race, John Chaimanis, trailed slightly with about 37 percent.
“To me, this is an invitation from the people of Newton to be a collaborator and to work together on all of the issues that we face and to get things done,” Dahmubed said. “I’m just incredibly grateful to everyone who voted for participating, no matter how they voted, and I’m incredibly thankful to the huge team across the city that helped make that happen.”
In Ward 5, Julie Irish won the ward seat after defeating Garry Miller 47 percent to 31 percent, and Brittany Charm will take one of that ward’s at-large seats after running unopposed.
Ward 6 will have Lisa Gordon and Sean Roche as at-large councilors. In a three-way race for two seats, Gordon garnered the most votes with more than 47 percent, and Roche came in second with almost 38 percent. Ted Gross trailed with about 21 percent.
“I’m honored and humbled,” Roche said. “And the message I got is that Newton voters want action on climate change and housing, they want action on accountability and transparency, and they want action on human dignity.”
Other new additions to the City Council include Brittany Charm, Brian Golden and Jacob Silber, who ran unopposed and won at-large seats in wards 5, 7 and 8, respectively.
