Autumn officially starts after this weekend, and you can already see pops of color on the trees. It also means fall events, more events and even more events.
This weekend is about learning. You can learn about Norwegian resistance during the Nazi occupation of Norway and talk to your neighbors about eco-friendly home improvements. On the arts side of things, there are concerts in Auburndale and Upper Falls.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Saturday, Sept. 20
At 1 p.m., Bob Ellertsen will give a talk about the book he translated from Norwegian to English, “Farsund’s Occupation History,” written by a member of the Norwegian Resistance during World War II about the Nazi occupation of Norway, at the Scandinavian Community Center 206 Waltham St. Free with registration.
From 2 to 4 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a Sustainability Cafe, teaching the ways to live more sustainably. You can chat with local homeowners who will showcase the eco-friendly improvements they’ve made, like installing solar panels, switching to heat pumps, composting, and creating organic gardens. Admission is free.
From 6:30 to 10 p.m. Don’t Forget Your Art, at United Parish of Auburndale, 64 Hancock St., will feature performances by Laura Vecchione and Ingrid Chiemi, hosted by Eric Riley Moore. There will also be Art by Anne-Catherine Higham, pottery by Julla Wolfe, spoken word by Deborah Bennett and Anne L. Moore, and a one-act play by Mary Fitzgerald. Proceeds benefit programs at the United Parish of Auburndale. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students.
Sunday, Sept. 21
From 2 to 3:30 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host Maitreyee Chakraborty singing songs inspired by notable Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, with instrumental accompaniment, at the Newton Free Library. Admission is free.
From 3 to 4 p.m., guitarist Christopher Steele will perform at Upper Falls Depot. Admission is free.
