This weekend represents that peculiar patch of time between Halloween and the holiday season, when anything is possible but not much actually happens.

Newton has an array of cultural activities to keep you entertained this weekend, including a classical music concert, a poetry concert and a chance to smash a pumpkin in public without getting arrested.

Hopefully you grabbed some of that warm summer air on Thursday, because November is coming in cooler.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Saturday, Nov. 2

From 1 to 4 p.m., Newton’s Annual Pumpkin Smash and “Green your Halloween” will be held outside City Hall,1000 Commonwealth Ave. There will be pumpkin smashing, touch-a-truck, a food truck and a chance to donate costumes and candy. All smashed pumpkins will be composted by Black Earth Compost.

From 10 a.m. to noon, the Durant-Kendrick House will host a workshop, “Uncovering Your Home’s History,” with a research specialist from Newton’s House Marker Program, teaching about resources available to look into a building’s history.

From 6:30 to 9 p.m., the Allen Center will host a reception for its upcoming exhibit, “Susan Adler: A Life Seen, A Legacy Remembered,” celebrating Susan Seidner Adler’s life and work. The exhibition of her figure paintings and soft figurines will be on display in the Allen Center gallery from Nov. 2 to Dec. 8, 2024. Light appetizers and refreshments will be served at the reception. Registration is requested for the reception.

From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Newton’s Bay Colony Brass will perform a concert, led by Music Director Philip Sanborn, featuring Richard Strauss’ Fanfare from “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust,” and selections from Gustav Holst’s monumental work, “The Planets.”

Sunday, Nov. 3

From 6 to 7 p.m., local singer-songwriter and author Ingrid Chiemi will perform a free concert at Tango Mango featuring musical poetry from all four of her books of lyrics. Her first three books, “Karma Bank to Following By Listening,” “Odd Simple Beauty” and “World As Refuge” will be available for sale. All proceeds respectively will benefit the Asian Community Development Corporation, Asian Women For Health and the Coalition for Anti-Racism in Education. Her most recent book, “Something In That Space,” which benefits the Korematsu Institute, will also be for sale.
