In November, Newton mourned the sudden loss of former Mayor Setti Warren, who died at the age of 55.
Now, there’s a City Hall internship in his memory aimed at helping the city’s culture and economy thrive.
The Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School—where Warren worked after serving as mayor—has joined with the city of Newton to offer the Setti Warren Memorial Internship.
Under this program, the intern—paid with funding from the Institute of Politics—will work with the city’s Economic Development Department and the new Arts & Culture Department, supporting the city’s Building a Creative Economy initiative.
The intern, according to a joint announcement from Harvard and the city, will “analyze the current financial impact of the creative sector on Newton’s economy and identify additional steps that the City can take to build and support its creative sector and use arts and culture to drive economic development.”
Warren served as director of the Institute of Politics from 2022 until his death in November. He was mayor of Newton from 2010 to 2018.
“Setti Warren believed deeply in public service and in the power of young people to strengthen our communities,” Mayor Marc Laredo said in the announcement. “This internship honors his legacy in the most meaningful way—by opening doors for the next generation to learn, serve, and help shape Newton’s future. We are grateful to the Institute of Politics for partnering with us on this tribute to a leader who loved this city and never stopped investing in its people.”
Encouraging young people to get involved with public service was a cornerstone of Warren’s administration. Mayor Warren started the city’s formal internship program in 2011, which placed students in government agencies, small businesses and STEM organizations and gave priority acceptance to at-risk and minority students.
“Setti benefited so much from the internships and mentoring he received from so many,” Tassy Warren, Setti’s wife, said. “He would be thrilled to see this opportunity created for the next generation in the city he loved so much.”
The Setti Warren Memorial Internship will run from June 1 to Aug. 15, 2026. Applications must be submitted online by Sunday, Feb. 1.
