If the Tuesday Farmers’ Market at Cold Spring Park looked more crowded than usual, it’s because there was a visit from a congressman who wants to be your new senator.
U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, running in a Democratic primary against U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, made a couple of stops in Newton–one at Johnny’s Luncheonette for a roundtable chat with young voters and another outside the Farmers’ Market–to make his case to Newton Democrats as people start voting this week.
The U.S,. Senate race in Massachusetts has gotten a lot of attention in recent weeks, as Moulton has run a campaign based largely on Markey’s age and even accused him of having connections with someone affiliated with notorious dead human trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. A poll shows Markey with a 17-point lead over Moulton, but the Boston Globe just came out endorsing Moulton in the race.
On Tuesday, Moulton took an upbeat approach.
“We’ve got two weeks until the election, and we have so much energy on the ground,” Moulton said as a crowd behind him waved campaign signs. “If you look at our supporters, they’re energized. Look at how many people we have out here at the farmers’ market in Newton today. We are surging across the state, and that’s exactly what we need to do to win.”
His supporters echoed that enthusiasm, with one woman even asking Moulton to autograph her lawn sign.
Markey made his own campaign stop in Newton in June.
