The Boston Red Sox will have their Opening Day game against the Rangers on March 27, in Arlington, Texas.
But you can celebrate the 2025 baseball season a few days earlier and a lot closer to home.
Singer, songwriter and former sportswriter Howie Newman will perform his Musical Baseball Show on March 20 at 1 p.m. at Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St.
“Baseball is the one sport that really lends itself to music,” said Newman, whose experience also includes three years of radio color commentary for the Lowell Spinners, a former Red Sox farm team. “I’ll be playing my own baseball songs and some other tunes that everyone knows. We’ll talk baseball, do some trivia and just have fun.”
Newman wrote about baseball for the Patriot Ledger, the Boston Globe, the Associated Press and other publications over the years. His Musical Baseball Show includes songs about the sport, trivia and stories from his time covering the Red Sox. There will also be a display of Newman’s baseball memorabilia collection and a raffle for one of his CDs.
Admission is free, and the event is being hosted by the Cooper Center for Active Living (which will have its own building in a few months).
Registration is requested. Email seniorprograms@newtonma.gov to register.
