Volunteers with Newton Food Pantry have helped thousands of families living with food insecurity over the past 42 years. And soon, they’ll be doing it from a new building: Newton’s first standalone food pantry.

The new 5,000-square-foot facility for the organization will be located at 131 Rumford Ave., Auburndale, and will have more storage and bigger service areas than its current City Hall location allows, along with state-of-the-art infrastructure and assigned parking.

“For years, we’ve seen a steady rise in the number of individuals and families relying on our services,” Jeff Lemberg, executive director of the Newton Food Pantry, said. “This new pantry represents hope for our community—a place where neighbors can find nourishment, connection and support in times of need.”

The land was donated to the Newton Food Pantry by an area developer, and construction is made possible with donations from residents and businesses.

“We are excited about the positive impact this new pantry will have on our clients and on the future of hunger-relief services in Newton,” Sindy Wayne, president of Newton Food Pantry’s Board of Directors, said. “But this is only the beginning—we need the community’s ongoing support to make this dream a long-term reality.”

Newton Food Pantry provides food assistance to more than 2,500 Newton residents, and demand has risen with the price of groceries. A Greater Boston Food Bank study found that almost 6,000 Newton residents live with food insecurity, with almost 4,000 at or below the federal poverty level.
