In these times of economic chaos and uncertainty, local economies can make all the difference. And Mayor-elect Marc Laredo is hoping to give the city an advantage with his economic development appointments.
“During my mayoral campaign, I committed to improving our economic development efforts by working closely with existing business owners, commercial landlords, and business organizations such as the Charles River Chamber of Commerce, to promote Newton as a place to start, run, and grow a business,” Laredo wrote in an announcement to the community this week.
Laredo has picked Lauren Berman, founder of All Over Newton, to be the city’s director of economic development.
Berman, who’s lived in Newton for nearly three decades, worked in the corporate world before the city hired her to help promote its farmers’ markets a few years ago.
Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down small businesses and devastated local economies nationwide, including in Newton. That’s when Berman created All Over Newton, an online company that spotlights local businesses and organizes shopping events throughout the year to give them a boost.
“I’m excited to lead Economic Development in Newton—a city in which I live and love. ,” Berman said. ” With 13 distinct villages and a panoply of diverse businesses, there’s a wealth of opportunity right here. I’m eager to work with the stellar team mayor-elect Laredo has assembled to best support our businesses, engage our residents, and pave the way for future growth. This is going to be a lot of fun!”
Berman won’t be alone. Laredo chose Cheryl Lappin as deputy director of economic development.
Lappin served on the Board of Aldermen, and then City Council when it changed name, for 18 years, and while in office she helped the city acquire what is now Newton Community Farm.
Professionally, Cheryl has worked in marketing for more than 30 years and is CEO of Bronze Memorial Inc., where she spearheaded a comprehensive rebranding and business model overhaul that drove efficiency and increased sales.
Lappin is the sister of current City Councilor Rick Lipof.
