It’s been quite a couple of years for School Committee Chair Chris Brezski, and he’s had enough.

“After much thought I have decided not to run again for the Ward 2 School Committee seat in November’s election,” Brezski announced to supporters on Wednesday morning. “It has been a pleasure to serve the students of NPS the past four years.”

Brezski, who was first elected to the committee in 2021, became chair in 2024 and has had a tenure marked by unprecedented hurdles. With impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic still lingering and months of a teacher union negotiation going nowhere, he took the helm as the city’s teachers were heading into what would be a two-week strike that would leave Brezski himself in tears during a press conference.

And this year, after Mayor Ruthanne Fuller allocated millions of dollars less for the schools than Superintendent Anna Nolin was asking for, Brezski joined Nolin on an advocacy tour, meeting with NPS families and building support for their cause until a deal was made with the mayor.

“Under Dr. Anna’s Nolin’s leadership, and the strong administrative staff she has assembled, I believe NPS is in very capable hands and headed in the right direction,” Brezski’s message continued.

Brezski took the opportunity to pitch two candidates in this year’s election: Ward 7 incumbent Alicia Piedalue and Ward 3 candidate Jason Bhardwaj, referring to them as “strong leaders to continue the work the Committee has started the last several years.”

And bringing efficiency to a new level, Brezski even announced and endorsed a candidate for his own seat.

“I am pleased to share that Linda Swain will be announcing her candidacy for the Ward 2 seat, and she has my full support,” he said. “Your support for candidates who put the best interest of our students first will be critical this coming November as there are races that will be contested by candidates who don’t share Dr. Nolin’s vision for NPS.”

Brezski joins a conga line of School Committee members and toward the exit doors. Anping Shen, Emily Prenner, Paul Levy, Barry Greenstein and the mayor are not seeking reelection.
