A Boston man awaits a pretrial hearing at Newton District Court after he was arraigned on charges for an alleged attempt to burn Lasell University property.

Stephen Johantgen, 29, of 444 Harrison Ave., Boston, pled not guilty to these charges April 10, and was released on personal recognizance with court-ordered conditions. He’s scheduled for a pretrial hearing on May 19, and he’s ordered to stay away from the Lasell University campus and avoid contact with its employees.

According to a police report from Lasell University, on March 30, a school employee saw Johantgen sitting on top of the soccer nets near the Mott House, the school’s counseling center.

The report states that the employee began speaking to Johantgen and started filming him, and Johantgen cursed at the employee, which caused the employee to leave the area and report the incident to the Lasell University Police Department.

Footage from the employee’s phone shows Johantgen holding a lighter, but it does not detail what property he was allegedly attempting to burn.

After the incident was reported, officers checked the soccer nets for signs of burning and could not locate any.

A supplemental police report states that Johantgen was caught on camera attempting to burn Lasell University property, and LUPD sent a flyer with pictures of the suspect to other police departments. Johantgen was identified as the suspect on April 4 after an officer from the MBTA Police Department contacted LUPD.

The supplemental report also states that Johantgen has a criminal record in multiple states and active arrest warrants from Olympia, Wash., and Orlando, Fla.

Based on these facts and the video footage, LUPD issued an arrest warrant for Johantgen on April 4.

On April 10, Johantgen was transferred from the Suffolk County House of Correction and arraigned in the Newton District Court for attempting to burn property.

During his arraignment, Johantgen’s fee for counsel was waived due to his financial circumstances.

The court granted Johantgen’s defense $500 to hire an investigator who would assist Johantgen’s legal counsel with interviewing witnesses and reviewing the videos of the incident.
