Newton Community Pride has been promoting arts and culture in Newton for more than three decades, and now the group has a new name: Spark Newton.
The name change is meant to reflect the group’s evolution and mission to ignite creativity in Newton.
“Spark Newton speaks to the energy and inspiration we strive to bring to our city,” said Blair Lesser Sullivan, Executive Director of Spark Newton. “We’re not just about celebrating what’s here; we’re about sparking new ideas, new friendships, and new ways for people of all ages and abilities to engage with their neighbors and local artists.”
The nonprofit, launched in 1989, celebrates art and community connection with events, public art displays, beautified public spaces and more.
Spark Newton will continue its work with arts and beautification, and it’s keeping its famous annual events—WinterFEST, Black History Month programming, the Linda Plaut Festival of the Arts, Haiku Newton and the upcoming Fall Village Concert Series, to name a few—and will keep doling out community micro grants and scholarships.
Open Studios and Porchfest are also sticking around, and Spark Newton will keep sponsoring city programs like the Artful Pianos Project and Halloween window decorating.
