Ted Gross of Newton Centre has officially announced his candidacy for one of two at-large City Council seats in Ward 6.
Gross has lived in Newton all his life. He’s semi-retired and serves as Ward 6 chair of the Newton Democratic Committee, as treasurer of that committee and as a member of the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee.
“I have spent most of my adult life participating as an unpaid volunteer, supporting Newton candidates and programs we care about,” Gross said.
He’s also on the Board of Directors for NewTV.
“We promote the exercise of the right to freedom of speech, allowing any Newton resident to use and be trained to use our equipment free of charge,” he said.
Now, Gross wants to expand on his lifelong passion for public service, with a seat in Newton’s City Council.
“President John F. Kennedy said, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.’ I interpret that to mean to think local; how can we help our city?”
If elected, Gross said he would support “responsible development and housing for young families with school debt, entry-level jobs and a moderate income.”
He also promises to give the senior community more representation and wants to focus more discussion on parking and traffic, as well as environmental protection.
“I will support the protection of our natural environment and open space while working against the damage caused by climate change,” he said.
Gross is running for one of two at-large seats in the ward, along with Sean Roche and Lisa Gordon.
Newton’s election will be Nov. 4.
