Display your jack-o-lanterns on Friday, smash them to bits on Saturday.

This weekend says goodbye to October and welcomes November with an annual Pumpkin Smash event outside City Hall. There’s also a Halloween party for older active adults and a costume parade for the kids. And then there’s an educational walk through a cemetery. It’s all about death and renewal this weekend, as the season takes a cold turn toward winter.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, Oct. 31

From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Pine Village Preschool, 1326 Washington St., West Newton, will have its Imagination Parade. Kids are welcome to join for a morning of creative fun and a costumed parade.

From 12 to 3 p.m., the Church Street YMCA, 276 Church St., will have an Active Older Adult Club Halloween Party, an opportunity to enjoy the spooky season and make some new friends as well. There will be food, beverages, music and more. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

Saturday, Nov. 1

From 1 to 4 p.m., Green Newton will host its 6th annual Pumpkin Smash outside Newton City Hall at the War Memorial Circle. You can bring your pumpkins to smash for composting. There will also be a food truck, a chance to donate excess candy and more. Pre-registration requested.

Sunday, Nov. 2

From 2 to 3 p.m., Historic Newton will host a walking tour of East Parish Burial Ground. The tour will teach about the mourning practices of New England from colonial days to the industrial era. Registration is required. Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for non-members and are available to purchase online.
