The seemingly endless pattern of rainy Saturdays strikes again.

With Saturday’s weather forecast calling for showers throughout the morning and afternoon, the city is moving the grand opening celebration for the Newton Centre Plaza to Sunday.

Fortunately, Sunday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the low-80s, so far (knock on wood).

Festivities will begin at noon, with art, games, and live ukulele music by the City Hall Strummers, near the corner of Centre and Beacon streets. The only thing there won’t be is a ribbon-cutting.

Crews have installed seating areas and shade canopies, and the pavement is painted in polka dots, so it shouldn’t be hard to find.

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced her idea for an outdoor gathering space next to the Newtron Centre Green earlier this year, as a way of bringing families to the village center all summer long. The plaza will temporarily take up a portion of the Langley Parking Lot.

And since having kids create outdoor chalk art in the rain would be both frustrating and cruel, the final installment of this season’s Linda Plaut Festival—Chalkfest—is also moved to Sunday.

Chalkfest, organized by Newton Community Pride, will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will work together to draw the longest sidewalk snake they can, led by artist Jill Strait. Bring your own chalk.

And look on the bright side: Saturday’s rain is washing the canvas for Sunday’s art.
