Newton South’s run in the MIAA Division 1 boys soccer championship came to an end on Tuesday night as they were defeated 2-0 by Natick in a semifinal contest held at Woburn High School.

South had a golden chance to seize the lead in the first half as forward Jonathan Mathew slid one past an advancing Natick goalkeeper, but his shot was cleared before it could cross the line. A few minutes later, Natick opened the scoring when forward Cole Boggis converted a goal past South goaltender CJ O’Toole.

It was all Natick needed. Newton South pressed in the second half, trying to find any way through a stout Natick defense, but managed few shots on goal. The overall number 2 seed, Natick put the game to bed with another goal in the 79th minute.

The loss ends another strong season for the Lions, who compiled a regular season record of 12-2-3.
