It’s been a long time coming, and on Friday, Newton Food Pantry held its grand opening of its new Rumford Avenue building.
This is Newton’s first standalone food pantry.
The Newton Food Pantry has operated for more than 40 years, helping thousands of families living with food insecurity, but it’s done so at City Hall. This new 5,000-square-foot facility for the organization—located at 131 Rumford Ave. in Auburndale—has more storage and bigger service areas than its City Hall location allowed, along with state-of-the-art infrastructure and assigned parking.
The new building opens at a time when it’s especially needed, with SNAP benefits constantly being eyed for cuts and inflation driving the cost of groceries out of reach for more and more families every month.
