The Spears Community Garden will have up to 30 beds, a composting area and more. Design by City of Newton
Four years ago, Newton residents suggested the city could use a community garden.
Now, that idea—the Spears Community Garden—is becoming a reality, on the city’s north side.
City Councilor Maria Greenberg said the garden’s journey “has been one of vision, persistence, and heartfelt community spirit.”
There will be a grand opening celebration at the garden on June 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Washington Street and Walnut park
Residents Marcus and Deb Breen, co-founders of the Friends of Tasun Community Garden at Spears Park group, broached the topic of a first-ever community garden to Greenberg in 2021.
Greenberg thanked Parks, Recreation and Culture Commissioner Nicole Banks and her team for guiding the process, as well as the Community Preservation Committee, Green Newton, State Sen. Cynthia Creem, The Village Bank and The Hauser Trust for getting funding for the garden.
Eagle Scouts Dhruv Vallurupalli and Trent Sturtevant helped construct the garden beds.
And Greenberg thanked Mayor Ruthanne Fuller for using ARPA funds for the garden.
“Because of Mayor Fuller’s vision, this once underutilized space will now thrive as a place where neighbors can grow fresh food, enjoy nature, and build lasting connections,” Greenberg said.
The Spears Community Garden will have up to 30 garden beds, two of which will be accessible for people with disabilities. It will have a fence to keep wild animals out, as well as a garden tool storage and composting area.
