As the government shutdown puts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at risk, a number of restaurants are stepping in to feed people in need.
The Charles River Regional Chamber has announced that more than 20 of its members will participate in its new Giftcards Giveback program, which sets aside a portion of their gift card sales to donate to Spoonfuls Inc., a Newton-based nonprofit food recovery organization. The program runs until Nov. 26, so you can keep that in mind as you plan holiday shopping.
Spoonfuls gets excess food from grocery stores, wholesalers and farms and delivers it to pantries, shelters and other community organizations across the Greater Boston and MetroWest regions.
“The quick response from our restaurant community has been remarkable,” Chamber President Greg Reibman said. “Whether or not folks choose to contribute to Spoonfuls or directly to their local pantry or Fridge doesn’t matter as long as we all collectively step up to help feed our neighbors at this critical time.”
Despite a court ruling pausing the SNAP cuts during the federal government shutdown, more permanent cuts to SNAP are expected in January, Reibman noted, and more than a million Massachusetts families rely on the program.
