Newton has a preliminary election coming up on Sept. 12, with early voting set to be Sept. 5 and 6, and voters will have a chance to hear from candidates on a wide range of issues impacting Newton.
For the 12th year, the 4 Area Councils are hosting a candidates’ debate for Newton’s preliminary races in wards 2 and 6.
The debate will be held at the Allen Center starting at 7 p.m., and it will be live-streamed on Facebook and Youtube.
Ward 2 candidates (Dan Gaynor, David Micley and Peter Bruce) will start their debate at 7 p.m. Ward 6 candidates (Martha Bixby, Mark Holt and Lisa Gordon) will start theirs at 8 p.m.
Parking: The Allen Center is in West Newton at the intersection of Webster and Cherry streets, but the address GPS directs to, 35 Webster St., has no parking on that side of the building other than one handicapped parking spot. The Cherry Street side has 25 parking spots, and attendees can also park at Family Access, which is a block away at 492 Waltham St.
Moderating the debate will be Marjorie Arons-Barron—former editorial director for WCVB. Emmy winner, inductee into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame and longtime resident of Newton. Arons-Barron also serves on the Newton Beacon’s Editorial Advisory Council.
