The nomination papers are in, and the game pieces for Election 2025 are set. Some wards have competitive races for City Council, some have races for School Committee and some have very little going on.
Who’s running for office? Who’s running for the hills? Here’s a breakdown, ward-by-ward. And it looks like there won’t be any preliminary elections in September, so the big day is the general election on Nov. 4.
Note: School Committee candidates come from each ward but are voted on by all voters.
Mayor
Mayor Ruthanne Fuller has decided not to seek a third term. City Council President Marc Laredo is running for mayor, and he faces challenger Al Cecchinelli.
Ward 1
This ward was initially set for a quiet election, but challenger Jonathan Kazakoff-Eigen has filed to run for City Council against incumbent Ward 1 Councilor Maria Greenberg.
At-large councilors John Oliver and Alison Leary are running for reelection unopposed.
For School Committee, incumbent Rajeev Parlikar is not seeking a third term, and candidates Christie Lee Gibson and Arrianna Proia are running to take his place.
Ward 2
For City Council, there are no races. Ward Councilor David Micley and at-large councilors Susan Albright and Tarik Lucas are running unopposed.
The School Committee race is where the competition is. Chair Chris Brezski is not seeking reelection, and candidates Christine Fisher and Linda Swain are vying for that seat.
Ward 3
This ward is also quiet on the City Council front. Incumbent Ward Councilor Julia Malakie and at-large councilors Andrea Kelley and Pamela Wright are all running unopposed.
For School Committee, Jason Venkat Bhardwaj is running unopposed for the seat, with current committee member Anping Shen prevented from running again due to term limits.
Ward 4
There’s a lot of action and a little confusion in this ward. Ward Councilor Randy Block is seeking a second term. At-large Councilor Lenny Gentile is retiring from the City Council after 18 terms. At-large Councilor Joshua Krintzman is running for reelection, facing newcomers John Chaimanis and Patrick Costello in a three-way race for two at-large seats.
And a new candidate, Cyrus Dahmubed, submitted papers for the ward seat (currently held by Block) and for an at-large seat. He has to withdraw from one of those races by Aug. 7. So he’ll either be competing against Block for the ward seat or against Krintzman, Chaimanis and Costello for one of two at-large seats.
For now, we can call this “Schrodinger’s Race.”
The School Committee race is much simpler. Tamika Olszewski is running unopposed.
Ward 5
Ward Councilor Bill Humphrey is not running for a fourth term, and Julie Irish and Garry Miller are running for that ward seat.
At-large Councilor Andreae Downs is also not running for reelection. So, at-large Councilor Rena Getz and newcomer Brittany Hume Charm are running unopposed for at-large seats.
On the School Committee side, Vice Chair Emily Prenner is not seeking a fourth term, and newcomers Jenna Lauter Miara and Ben Schlesinger are running to fill that seat.
Ward 6
Last cycle, this ward saw a recount for the ward seat, which was won by Martha Bixby. But Councilor Bixby will run unopposed this year. Instead, the action is in the at-large races.
At-Large Councilor Vicki Danberg is not seeking an 11th term. And At-Large Councilor Alan Lobovits is running for a second term against Sean Roche, Ted Gross and Lisa Gordon (the candidate who had challenged Bixby in the ward race last time).
For School Committee, incumbent Paul Levy is not seeking reelection, and Mali Brodt and Jonathan Greene are running for that seat.
Ward 7
Ward Councilor Lisle Baker is running unopposed, and At-Large Councilor Marc Laredo is giving up his seat to run for mayor. This leaves At-Large Councilor Becky Grossman and newcomer Paul Golden running unopposed for the ward’s two at-large seats.
Incumbent School Committee member Alicia Piedalue won a special election for the seat a few months ago. Bruce Hedison will not be on the ballot because he did not submit the required nomination papers.
Ward 8
Incumbent City Councilor Stephen Farrell is unopposed, and incumbents David Kalis and Rick Lipof will face challenger Jacob Silber for the ward’s two at-large seats.
For School Committee, Barry Greenstein is not seeking reelection, and newcomers Victor Lee and Jim Murphy are running for that seat.
