City Clerk Carol Moore is leaving her job in Newton at the end of the month. And the City Council wasn’t about to let her leave without a big “thank you.”

City Council President Marc Laredo and Vice President David Kalis presented Moore with a resolution honoring her service as steward of Newton’s local democracy.

“We thank Ms. Moore for her dedication and wish her continued success in all of her endeavors,” Laredo said.

Moore didn’t have a speech prepared, but she did take a moment to thank the City Council and the city in general for showing her how much local government matters.

“It’s been an honor to serve the city and to see such passionate people spend so much of their unpaid time to be here,” Moore said. “Local government is really where it starts, and it’s really where people feel the most impact on their day-to-day lives.”

Moore served as city clerk in Mukilteo, Wash., a coastal city with about 23,000 residents, before starting as Newton’s city clerk (with almost 90,000 residents) in October 2021, right before a big local election.

As clerk, Moore has managed City Council meetings and conducted research for a variety of decisions made in those chambers. She also oversaw the technological overhaul of the clerk’s office, which included new online systems for ordinances, licenses and permits. And she’s had to navigate a sea of new rules for mail-in and absentee voting in a post-pandemic democracy.
