Moments Cafe opened recently at 1284 Washington St. in West Newton and offers specialty coffees, like tiramisu lattes, as well as various flavors of matcha and desserts, including croffles (croissant waffles).

“My wife and I love coffee,” said Tai Huynh, who owns the cafe with his wife, Phuong Nguyen.

The two live in Quincy, but they’re happy to call West Newton home for their new business. “We were looking around for a space, and found Flora’s Wine Bar up for sale, and we thought this neighborhood was missing a coffee shop,” he said. While they added new paint and furniture, converting a wine bar into a coffee shop luckily didn’t require major renovations.

One of their offerings that not every coffee shop has is matcha, which is finely ground green tea.

“We were able to connect with the best matcha suppliers,” said Huynh.

It’s long been popular in Japan, but only recently has it taken off in the United States. The cafe has several flavors of matcha lattes available. They also have a hojicha latte, which is another kind of ground Japanese tea that hasn’t become quite as popular yet. (Matcha is highly caffeinated; hojicha is only mildly caffeinated.)

There’s also some less-common coffee drinks, like an Einspänner latte (a Viennese drink with espresso and cream) and a cortado (a Spanish drink with espresso and milk), but there are standard coffees as well. “My favorite is just a regular hot latte,” said Huynh, although he enjoys an occasional sweeter drink as a treat. There’s also food, both standard cafe fare like bagels and muffins, but also croffles, which are a mix between a croissant and a waffle: croissant dough pressed in a waffle iron. It was popularized in South Korea, and is available with both sweet and savory toppings.

Huynh and Nguyen have been pleased by the positive community response. The mayor and the city councilor came to the grand opening, and the other business owners on their block have been supportive. And the customers have been streaming in, which he attributes to not just their drinks but also the pleasant environment.

“I don’t see other places that offer the same vibe—what makes us different is the atmosphere,” he said.

There’s several smaller tables and one larger table, plus the window bar. He’s enjoyed seeing people come in to do work, have meetings or just hang out with their friends.

How are things going now as they settle in for fall?

“So far, so good,” he said.
