Mochiko Hawaiian BBQ in Newtonville suddenly has a “Closed” sign in its window. The loud pop music no longer serenades the sidewalks, and the smell of fried chicken wafting through the Walnut Street is gone.

The popular lunch spot, which opened right in the heart of Newtonville’s village center in 2022, expanded to a second location at the Boston Landing complex in Brighton this summer. Co-owner Sang Phan posted in a Newton-focused Facebook group welcoming Newtonians to try the new location.

But last week, Greater Boston restaurant blogger announced that the owners had abruptly closed both locations. And the Mochiko website had both locations missing from its website.

The Mochiko mystery added another layer this week when the Brighton location reopened and appeared on the Mochiko website. Newtonville did not. And it doesn’t look like it’s coming back to Walnut Street any time soon.

“We are focusing on Brighton only now,” Phang said in a message clarifying the situation on Thursday morning.

So, Mochiko is still in business. Just not in Newton anymore.

Mahalo for the memories, Mochiko.
