Braintree Police Chief Timothy V. Cohoon is coming to Newton to lead the Newton Police Department.

Mayor Marc Laredo announced on Monday afternoon that Cohoon was his pick—a decision made jointly with former Mayor Ruthanne Fuller—to be Newton’s next police chief, starting in late February.

Cohoon has been chief in Braintree for three years, and he’s served in law enforcement for three decades.

“An accomplished and experienced leader, Chief Cohoon believes being an effective leader requires vision, high standards, and a strong team,” Laredo wrote in his announcement. “Importantly, he knows that community trust is essential and that police departments, stakeholders and residents co-produce public safety.”

Laredo lauded Cohoon for his focus, as Braintree’s chief, on strengthening community trust and modernizing operations, calling him an “innovative leader.”

“Chief Cohoon will take over leadership of an excellent police department with exceptional, well-trained and dedicated police officers committed to protecting our community,” Laredo wrote.

Cohoon, who is set to meet with the City Council this month before the Council votes on approval, will succeed Chief George McMains, who retired earlier this month.
