Meteorological fall has begun, but the autumnal equinox is weeks way, and this summer-fall transition time is great for getting out and socializing.

The Hyde Community Center closes out its summer concert series on Friday. The Garden City Tennis Series has a couple of events for tennis fans to enjoy at Newton South. And there’s Scandinavian Gong music for those who want to hear what Scandinavian Rui Gong music sounds like.

Here are seven things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, Sept. 5

From 6 to 10 p.m., listen to Boston Rock and Soul Revue at the Hyde Community Center and stick around to watch “Paddington in Peru,” the 2025 movie about Paddington Bear returning to Peru to find a lost relative. The movie is rated PG.

Saturday, Sept. 6

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the 3rd Annual Isadore Singer Cup will feature Garden City Tennis Championships, High Performance Doubles Open at Newton South High School. Prizes range from gift cards to $500.

Sunday, Sept. 7

From 1 to 3:30 p.m., West Newton Cinema will host a screening and panel discussion of the film “Caught by the Tides,” from acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke. The movie spans two decades and features archival footage from Jia’s earlier films and documentary-style material to show transformation in modern China. The panel discussion after the movie will focus on the broader cultural and historical impacts of that transformation.

From 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton, 1326 Washington St., West Newton, will host its annual Homecoming, with a dedication of the new Welcome Poles, chime music and a water ceremony. Then there will be a service followed by refreshments and an Annual Expo.

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Garden City Tennis Series will present its Women’s Doubles Championships. Top area women college, junior and adults will compete at Newton South High, and the winning team will receive the June Ferestien Cup, honoring June Ferestien—former Top 100 WITA professional and Newton’s most accomplished tennis player.

From 2 to 3 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a concert by pianists Min Oh of the Boston Piano Ensemble and Jei Yern Ryu with music by Schubert, Fauré and Poulenc.

From 3 to 4 p.m., hear piano prodigy Rui Gong play music from the five Nordic countries at the Scandinavian Cultural Center, 206 Waltham St., and listen to internationally renowned concert pianist, music historian and Harvard visiting researcher Dr. Paul-André Bempéchat explain the context of each piece.
