You may want to pinch yourself. This weekend calls for neither rain nor a scorching heatwave.
And if you’re into sunshine, puppets, drag queen origin stories and chimes, this first weekend of August is for you. Of course, this is New England so, technically, that “sunshine” part can change at any time.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Aug. 1
From 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., watch Pumpernickel Puppets perform classic folk tales, including Sir George and the Dragon, at the Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St.
From 6 to 10 p.m., listen to big band Soft Touch Dance Band and stick around for 70s summer camp comedy film “Meatballs” at the Hyde Bandstand, 90 Lincoln St.
Saturday, Aug. 2
From 4 to 6 p.m., West Newton Cinema will host a Q&A with director Sandi DuBowski, a 39th generation ex-Orthodox rabbi about his personal journey and life as a drag queen.
From 5 to 6 p.m., the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton will present a free Summer Chime Concert in West Newton Square. All are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments to the church grounds to enjoy the event. You can also listen to it throughout West Newton. Indoor seating will be provided in case of rain.
Sunday, Aug. 3
At 6 p.m., listen to Latin music from Sol y Canto at the Newton Centre Bowl near Tyler Terrace.
You can find more events or submit your own on our Events Page.
And the city has an ongoing list of arts-related events on the Newton Arts Calendar.
