The best thing about this week of gloomy, rainy existence is that mothers everywhere will be gifted a sudden sunny celebration on Mother’s Day.

After some rain off and on Friday and Saturday, with temperatures staying cool and raw, Sunday is set to bring a 70-degree sunny rebirth of sorts, to pair perfectly with brunch and flowers.

Meanwhile, there are a few concerts to check out in Newton as well as an event for kids at the West Suburban YMCA.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, May 9

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., All Newton Music School will host a concert, “Strings Bowed, Plucked, and Struck,” at 321 Chestnut St. in West Newton, celebrating the versatility of strings and their use in a variety of musical instruments. The performance will include music from Astor Piazzolla, Manuel de Falla, Aram Khachaturian, Franz Liszt and others. Tickets are $35.

From 2 to 4 p.m., Church of the Redeemer will host “Cellobration: A Feast of Music for One to Eight Cellos,”  379 Hammond St., Chestnut Hill, with cellist Mark Churchill, Alexandra Wiebe as soprano and Victor Cayres on piano. Tickets are $20 to $30.

Saturday, May 10

At 1 p.m., watch Gold’s Run, a 2022 film about smuggling gold out of Norway during Nazi occupation by a group of resistance fighters. This is a 114-minute film in Norwegian with English subtitles. Tickets are $10 for non-members, $5 for members.

From 2 to 4 p.m., the West Suburban YMCA will host its Healthy Kids Day, a free family-friendly event designed to inspire kids to be healthy and active, at 276 Church St. There will be sports, games, arts and crafts, snacks and more.

Sunday, May 11

From 2 to 3 p.m., Newton Free Library will host a concert by Yoni Avi Battat, focusing on Battat’s fragmented Iraqi-Jewish identity and inspired by traditional Arab musical forms, combining Hebrew, Arabic, English and Yiddish lyrics, fragmented to express the effects of migration and colonialism, assimilation and erasure.

And the city has an ongoing list of arts-related events on the Newton Arts Calendar.
