“You know how I always dread the whole year? Well, this time I’m only going to dread one day at a time.” —Charlie Brown
You made it to 2025, Newton.
There’s a lot to do this year, but first, some much-needed fun, rest and relaxation. Saturday offers a whole day for venting the kids’ pent-up winter break energy, too.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Jan. 3
From 8 to 9 p.m., the Scandinavian Cultural Center will host an opening reception with Juliana Gagné for their first art exhibit, titled “The Dream Dimension: Beyond the Veil,” inspired by Gagne’s Grandfather, Dr Sherman Eddie Nelson, a pioneering psychologist who came from a family of Sámi, Nordic and Finnish immigrants. Admission is free with registration.
Saturday, Jan. 4
From 10 to 10:50 a.m., the Jewish Community Center of Greater Boston, 333 Nahanton St., will host “Winter Ninjas,” a “play” on the TV show competition “American Ninja Warrior,” for kids ages 4 and 5, with stretching, climbing, tumbling and more.
From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a Calming Glitter Sensory Bottles program, in which participants (kids in grades 5 through 12) create and keep a glitter bottle to help calm anxiety. Registration is required.
From 3 to 4:45 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a Movie Matinee showing “The Wild Robot,” a rated-PG movie about a robot named Roz who’s stranded on an uninhabited island and bonds with the island’s animals, starring the voices of Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara and Bill Nighy.
Sunday, Jan. 5
From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Newton Youth Hockey will host its Learn to Play Hockey Program. The program is led by professional instructors, and the drills and games are designed for both skill development and fun.
