Five things to do in Newton this weekend

“It’s hard to hold a candle in the cold November rain.”—Guns N’ Roses, Use Your Illusion

This November, we needed the rain… badly. And we’re getting a lot of it this weekend. But thankfully, we won’t need to hold a real candle for Saturday night’s candlelight scavenger hunt. And skies are expected to be sunny for Sunday’s Turkey Trot.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, Nov. 22

From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., the Leading Players and Boston College Theatre Department will present “Pippin,” a play about a young prince looking for purpose, at Robsham Theatre Arts Center, Campanella Way, Chestnut Hill.

Saturday, Nov. 23

From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Newton Youth Hockey will host its Learn to Play Hockey Program. The program is led by professional instructors, and the drills and games are designed for both skill development and fun.

From 3 to 4:30 p.m., WeStar will host its Thanksgiving Charity Concert at the Shops at Chestnut Hill, featuring winners of the Boston International Music Competition.

From 4 to 8 p.m., Historic Newton will host its Candlelight Scavenger Hunt at the Jackson Homestead. Participants will venture through the property hunting for designated items and the chance to win a prize. There will also be time to make shadow puppets and tell spooky stories.

Sunday, Nov. 24

At 8:30 a.m., Zervas Elementary School will host the Turkey Trot, with more than 1,400 people participating in this annual race to support the Newton Food Pantry, the Centre Street Pantry and Journey Forward.
