August is coming in hot. Really hot. And humid. And with some thunderstorms.
Fortunately, Newton has a mix of activities all weekend for those who can take the heat and for those who are keeping it cool.
Bring the kids to a movie in West Newton. Enjoy a concert at the Hyde. Check out a poetry-themed party in Newtonville. Bask in the slow days of summer while you can.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Aug. 2
From 6 to 10 p.m., The Hyde Center will host an outdoor concert by the Soft Touch Dance Band, a Waltham-based classic big band with full horn and rhythm sections and two vocalists specializing in swing-era music from the 1940s to the 1960s, Broadway hits and classic rock.
Saturday, Aug. 3
From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the city will have its Saturday Farmers Market at Newton North High School.
From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., West Newton Cinema will host a party to celebrate the release of Harold and the Purple Crayon. Guests can go dressed as their favorite characters from the beloved children’s story and have their photos taken. There will also be arts and crafts as well as snacks and beverages.
Sunday, Aug. 4
At 2 p.m., Newtonville Books will have a Poetry Party to celebrate the launch of Something in That Space, a new book of five song collections by Newton resident Ingrid Chiemi. Local poets will read poems, and Chiemi will perform songs from her book.
From 6 to 7:30 p.m., Newton Cultural Development will host a free summer concert performed by the Beantown Buckaroos, at the Newton Centre Bowl in the open space adjacent to the playground and just down the hill from the Tyler Terrace hut.
