It’s the weekend before the big celebration, so you may want to rest up and take it easy. That doesn’t mean staying home bored. Check out a concert and a movie at the Hyde. Head over to Nonantum on Sunday for a block party.

Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have mostly beautiful New England weather to greet you, with temperatures expected to be in the high 70s with mostly clear skies all weekend.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, June 26

From 6 to 8 p.m., Pull up a blanket and listen to Studio Two cover The Beatles at the Hyde Community Center, 90 Lincoln St, and stick around from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. to watch the 1993 film “Groundhog Day,” about a man repeating the same day over and over. This 101-minute film is rated PG.

Saturday, June 27

From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the city will have its Saturday Farmers’ Market at Newton North High School.

From 2 to 3:30 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a workshop, “Paint a Garden Gnome,” for kids in grades 5 through 12, with participants getting a 3D-printed garden gnome to paint and decorate. Registration is required.

Sunday, June 28

From 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nonantum will host its Village Day at Coletti-Magni Park, featuring live music, food from Nonantum Press and Uncle Joey’s Cannolis, a magic show and lots of community fun.

From noon to 2 p.m., the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton, 1326 Washington St., West Newton, will host a workshop, “Letters: In the Company of Writers,” in which participants engage in timed writing sessions based on a prompt and then share their writings with each other.
