Newton provides partly subsidized, fee-based transportation, GoGo, for seniors as well as people with disabilities and low incomes.
“The GoGo service links riders with carefully vetted and selected Uber and Lyft drivers 24/7 with point-to-point service,” Mayor Ruthanne Fuller wrote in a recent update to the community. “Since last July, more than 1,138 residents have registered, and the service has provided 10,008 trips to destinations in and beyond Newton.”
But after the city switched its transportation service from NewMo to GoGo last summer, complaints mounted over the increased cost.
So the city has made some changes. And one of those changes is a drop in price. “You asked for more affordable rides, and we heard you,” Mayor Fuller wrote.
That includes rate cuts for all three tiers of GoGo riders.
- Tier 1 (residents with very low income): Initial fee is cut from $4 to $3 and the city pays up to the next $13, with 12 rides offered per month.
- Tier 2 (all low-income residents): Initial fee is cut from $6 to $4, and the city pays up to the next $12, with eight rides offered per month.
- Tier 3 (seniors and people with disabilities): Initial fee is cut from $8 to $6, and the city pays up to the next $10, with four rides offered per week.
“We’re also increasing the City’s contribution: we’ll now cover the remaining portion of any fare that totals $16 (up from $14),” Fuller added. “That means even less out of your pocket.”
GoGo was launched in 2016 and works with hundreds of nonprofit groups in communities across the country, including Brookline, to provide a reliable source of transportation, for a fee, to those who need it.
If you’d like you use GoGo Newton, you’ll have to register first. And you’ll need documentation showing your age, your disability status or your income (whichever is applicable to your situation) and complete a verification process online or by appointment.
