The New England Scholastic Press Association has named its picks for the 17 top high school journalists in New England, with winners appointed to work on NESPA’s All New England High School Journalism Staff, and six of them are from Newton.
No other community had more than two people chosen.
Here are Newton’s winners:

Marty Basaria serves as editor-in-chief of Newton South High School’s online newspaper, Denebola. He previously served as that publication’s arts editor. And he’s been a writer and photographer for Airways Magazine.

Savannah Bond serves as co-editor-in-chief of Newton North’s The Newtonite, with advisers Amanda Mazzola and Scott Dunlop, and an anchor, reporter, editor, and producer on Newton North TV. She also covered sports last year for The Newton Beacon.

Aoba Fujita is co-editor in chief of Newton South’s yearbook, Regulus with Brian Baron as adviser. She’s attended multiple journalism conventions and has won the Walsworth Gallery of Excellence award.

Mia Lahav is co-editor-in-chief of Newton South’s yearbook, Regulus, with Brian Baron as advisor, and she specializes in design and digital media, and she’s a big Celtics fan.

Dea Pance serves as co-editor in chief of Newton North’s The Newtonite, with advisers Tom Fabian and Derek Knapp, and she’s involved with Girls Who Start—an organization that helps girls become leaders and entrepreneurs.

Risha Sinha serves as co-editor-in-chief of Newton South’s The Lion’s Roar, with adviser Ashley Chapman, and she currently volunteers for Marc Laredo’s mayoral campaign.

Sinha was also named a runner up for the Massachusetts High School Journalist of the Year award. And Fujita and Lahav were the only two winners from yearbooks throughout New England.
